MICE

Mice, like keyboards, are input devices and vary in design depending on the tasks required.
Mice became popular in the 1980’s when computer manufactures developed operating system software that used icons, like Microsoft’s Windows and Apple's Macintosh.

Earlier mice had a small, rubberized ball inside to enable it to track hand movements. These over time picked up small dust particles on the desk, and interfered with their fluid movement. Also the ball needed to roll easily and so often was placed on a neoprene mouse pad.

Mice developed and by 1999 started to have optical light sensors (the little red light under the mouse) to detect movement and so the need for the rolling ball became less popular. Subsequently the neoprene pad was not needed but somehow has still remained popular on the desktops!
